[Climateprediction.net] New project: Urban heat and future city development

Cities are often warmer than their surroundings, especially at night, because buildings, roads and other urban surfaces store heat during the day and release it after sunset. Climate change will raise background temperatures, while the way cities grow may change where and how strongly heat is experienced. This project will examine five major cities, including London, New York City, Hong Kong, Mumbai and Lagos, to understand how future warming and urban development interact.

Volunteers will run many high-resolution Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model simulations. The project will compare present-day conditions with a climate state around 2°C warmer than pre-industrial levels. Under the same future climate-change forcing, it will compare today’s urban form with contrasting development pathways described in policy documents; "compact" and "sprawling" pathways.

Technical info
Linux only.
WRF multicore long-running simulations; minimum of 4 cores. Typical run-times will be ~10+ days if 24/7 computing. Memory required: 6Gb. Client app_config.xml use is supported up to 8 cores max.

Due to the long-running nature of these tasks, if you want to run them, please enable the 'WRF' option on your CPDN Project Preferences page on your CPDN account.

Please ensure you have 'Leave non-GPU applications in memory whilst suspended' enabled. This prevents a restart from checkpoint files which is costly.

[NFS@home] CUDA-based GPU sieving test

A new GPU lattice sieve for NFS, cuda-sieve, was recently released. A new app has been added to NFS@Home to test this. Currently, it's only available for nVidia Ampere or higher GPUs running x86_64 Linux. Once the code stabilizes, additional platforms will be added.

[Einstein@home] Downtime Wednesday August 12

This Wednesday (August 12, 2026) our Internet Service Provider at the Leibniz University Hannover is conducting an extended maintenance of the network infrastructure. Because of this our project will be unreachable between approximately 4 AM and 7 AM UTC.
